Clay Soil Is The Worst...

Picture
Not many of us inherit good fertile soil with our homes.  In fact if you bought a home in a new development chances are your home has been built on freshly graded soil.  Often times when grading has been done the top soil with all of the nutrients has been removed leaving a clay soil.  Clay soil is the worst soil because it is hard to work with, contains little organic matter is slow to drain and sticky when wet.

A workable solution to clay soils

A workable solution to planting in clay soil is to apply organic soil bought in bulk from your local nursery or recycling center. Buying it in bulk is the most inexpensive and most places deliver the material.
You simply apply the organic soil 2" thick over the areas you will be planting in.  Roto-till the soil to a 6" depth.  Rake the dirt around removing the debris like rocks and weeds.
This works really well if you are planting a lawn as most seeds and sod will grow wonderfully for years in this type of soil.

The rule of thumb is most folks do some kind of major change to the landscape every 7 to 10 years.

We Recommend...
When starting a new project you may want to look through magazines and drive around the neighborhood and look at what others have done to get ideas for your project.  The pictures below are of a landscape project installed for Darren and Joyce in Mountain House.
